RoboMaster infantry robot, 2024 season
ROLE & KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
Infantry mechanical designer (alongside sentry lead duties), rebuilding a legacy platform around the team's synchro-drive drivetrain.
- Replaced the legacy Mecanum platform with the synchro-drive drivetrain, cutting chassis weight ~45%;
- Relocated the magazine onto the gimbal's yaw rotation axis, lowering gimbal moment of inertia by over 40%;
- Achieved 0.3 s/rev chassis spin under the 100 W power limit.
Why a redesign
The team's infantry robot was inherited from the 2019 season: a Mecanum-wheel platform with unavoidable wheel power losses, an overweight chassis, and — like the 2023 sentry — a side-mounted magazine that dragged the gimbal's center of gravity off its rotation axis.
What changed
- Adapted the synchro-drive wheel sets and custom gearbox I developed for the sentry to the infantry's design envelope, resolving the chassis overweight problem (see the drivetrain deep dive).
- Relocated the magazine onto the gimbal's yaw rotation axis, reducing the gimbal's moment of inertia by more than 40%.
